Bye Bye.......Urban Meyer
From ESPN.com:
Meyer to coach final game at Sugar Bowl
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer, who was admitted to a hospital because of chest pains following the Southeastern Conference championship game, is stepping down because of health concerns.Meyer resigned Saturday, calling it quits after five seasons in Gainesville and two national titles. He goes into the bowl game with a 56-10 record at Florida that includes a 32-8 mark in league play and a school-record 22-game winning streak ended early this month against Alabama.
HISTORIC RUN

Coach | School | Record | Win pct. |
---|---|---|---|
Urban Meyer | Florida | 95-18 | .841 |
Pete Carroll | USC | 96-19 | .835 |
Bob Stoops | Oklahoma | 116-29 | .800 |
Mark Richt | Georgia | 89-27 | .767 |
Gary Patterson | TCU | 85-27 | .759 |
Meyer will hold a news conference in New Orleans on Sunday afternoon and will coach his final game in the Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati on New Year's Day.
"I have given my heart and soul to coaching college football and mentoring young men for the last 24-plus years and I have dedicated most of my waking moments the last five years to the Gator football program," Meyer said in a statement. "I have ignored my health for years, but recent developments have forced me to reevaluate my priorities of faith and family.
"After consulting with my family, Dr. Machen, Jeremy Foley and my doctors, I believe it is in my best interest to step aside and focus on my health and family."
"Coach Meyer and I have talked this through and I realize how hard this was for him to reach this decision," Foley said in a statement. "But, the bottom line is that Coach Meyer needed to make a choice that is in the best interest of his well being and his family. I certainly appreciate what he has meant to the University of Florida, our football program and the Gator Nation. I have never seen anyone more committed to his players, his family and his program. Above all, I appreciate our friendship."
Meyer helped the Gators win two national titles in five years at Florida. He is the only coach to win two BCS titles.
A three-time national coach of the year, Meyer is 95-18 in nine seasons.
Meyer came to Florida from Utah, where he closed out his stint with 16 consecutive wins. He began his head coaching career at Bowling Green in 2001, where he engineered the top turnaround in NCAA Division I-A football, showing a six-win improvement from the previous season. The Falcons rebounded from a 2-9 record with their first winning season (8-3) since 1994.

It's.......About Time!
It took......
27 years.....10 jobs as an assistant coach......and 7 Universities....
Finally.........Charlie R. Strong.......has been named at head coach at a major college. Years and years of rejection after rejection......Years and years .....of interview after interview.
And finally....the University of Louisville ....has had the good sense.....and the guts.....to hire this man.
Qualifications........were never a problem for Mr. Strong. As a defensive coordinator, he produced feared programs throughout the southeast at schools like Florida and South Carolina.
But the fact remained......and still does.......Charlie Strong.... is married to ....a white woman.
And throughout the 70's, 80's, and even the 90's.....that just didn't sit well with the lily white booster clans.....of southern college football.
Welcome........Mr. Strong......we hope you are a great success at Louisville........and Louisville.....We salute you......for having the foresight.......and the "marbles".......to make this hire.

ESPN Benches Bob Griese for 'Taco' Crack
Posted Oct 26th 2009 8:35PM by TMZ Staff
Can anyone at ESPN keep a job? The network suspended Bob Griese today for a racist remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
While he was calling Saturday's Minnesota-Ohio State game, Griese made a crack about Montoya saying he was "out having a taco." Montoya is Colombian.
ESPN is yanking Griese off the air for one week, and a rep for the network says Griese "understands the comment was inappropriate."
Yesterday ESPN fired baseball analyst Steve Phillips after news broke of his sex scandal with a production assistant.
Sucker Punch??
You decide.......
Compliments of ESPN and YouTube.....

Things.....We Learned.......From the Week-end...

ESPN - Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino was ejected from the outfield in the top of the seventh inning on Sunday.
Victorino threw his arms up after a pitch by Rodrigo Lopez to Florida's Wes Helms was called a ball.
Home plate umpire Ed Rapuano promptly tossed him. Victorino ran in from center, but was restrained by teammates.
Are you kidding me? 50,000 screaming fans.......a batter in the box........both dugouts yelling....and this umpire sees the center fielder..........raise his arms in discuss........and tosses him from the game?
Hey ........Ump.......try paying more attention to that strike zone.......and not a guy 300 yards away. Whatever made these guys think they are the kings on the diamond? There has never.....and will never .....ever be a ticket to a major league game.....sold.......because.......of the umpires.
Wear your blue.......call strikes and balls........safes and outs.....fairs and fouls.....and then....just go........preferably..... away..........and preferably........quietly.
Maybe..........Junior........is .......just not....that good!
Dale Earnhardt ....... (rest his soul) was a great race car driver....."The Intimidator".....fearless........driven.....NASCAR fans most popular guy. Dale, Sr. has passed on . And the the NASCAR gods named his son, Dale Earnhardt, Jr as the heir apparrent to the racing throne.

And while Dale Jr. remains NASCAR's most popular driver to date...........We here at 5 on Five.....beg to ask.......why? No wins this year...... one in 2008.......none in 2007..........and one each in 2006 and 2005. Not since 2004.......has Jr. won more than once (6 times in that 2004 season) while still racing with DEI (Dale Earnhardt, Inc.).
Since then.......Dale has had a falling out with his step-mom.......Left DEI........fired a crew chief....and still has trouble finishing in the top ten.
Today at the Watkins Glen road race.....his breaks locked up......at other races this year, he's blown engines.......over run pit stops.......destroyed tires.......and all the while.....rarely competing for the wins.
Maybe........Dale, Jr.......is just not that good of a driver..........bad luck is one thing........and bad driving is another.
As equal as all these NASCAR cars are..........it is the driver ....that makes the difference.
And it's becoming very clear........there is a distinque differerence........between Dale, Sr. .......and Dale, Jr.
Some stuff.......we're thinking.....
My beloved Atlanta braves took 3 out of 4 from the L A Dodgers.......should have swept...
Michael Vick..........remains .....unsigned....surprised? We're not.
In Georgia this weekend.......two teens were playing with a gun....they thought was not loaded..... Guess what happened?
We love you, President Obama....we voted for you.......but please, take a deep breath....take two steps backward........and chill.... you cannot solve all this country's and the free world's problems in six months.
I finally cut our grass Saturday........I started at 8:30 in the morning.....and was done by 11:00........Caution though.......the mower does not respond nicely .......to wet grass.
Finally......Here's to my parents.......and their 54th wedding anniversary.......
Finally, finally........54 years?????
54 years............a half a century..........plus four.......54 years......two scores, a decade, and another four years.
54 years...........that's 648 months...........19,710 days............waking up .....with the same person.........
Everyday.
Wow!
Have a great Monday......
A "Tree".......in the ......."Forrest"

He stood.......six feet tall.......weighed about a buck fifty....a welterweight.....then a light-heavyweight.
He was a professional boxer.......fought the likes of "Sugar Shane" Mosey.......twice......and beat him both times.
He won 41 of 45 professional fights. 29 by KO's.....
He simply was.......the best pure boxer.......America.......never knew.
And .....why are we talking about this man.......in ....the past tense?
Vernon Forrest........was killed.......murdered.......
From news reports:
At about 11:00 pm EDT on July 25th 2009, Forrest stopped at a gas station in the Atlanta neighborhood of Mechanicsville. With him was his 11-year-old godson. As the boy went inside the gas station, Forrest went to the back of his car to add air to a low tire. As this occurred, a man robbed him at gunpoint and fled. Forrest, who was armed, went after the man and shots were exchanged. After a short distance, Forrest gave up the chase and began walking back to the gas station. It was then that the man shot Forrest seven to eight times in the back. According to police, the shooter and a second person left the scene in a red Monte Carlo. Forrest was pronounced dead at the scene and the death was ruled a homicide. On August 4th 2009 Atlanta Police arrested and charged a 20 year old man for his murder.
Senseless...........brutal.
Vernon, lived the way he boxed. No surrender......In his mind, some young punk.......would not get his hard earned money or car........without a fight.
But these thugs don't play fair..........they shot him in the back. 7 times.
And the biggest "tree"........in the "Forrest" ........was dead.
Vernon Forrest.........May you rest in peace....
Get to know him.......courtesy of our friends at ESPN:

Things We Learned.......From the Week-end

Yes, it happened in Baltimore........at the Preakness Stakes.......at the Pimlico Racetrack. This is the second leg of the three biggest races of thorough bred horse racing in the calender year.
A filly..........a female........a three year old.......dominated her male counter parts. She led from virtually start to finish........holding off Kentucky Derby winner, "Mind that Bird" by a half length.
Her name? Fittingly......"Rachel Alexandra"........
And on this day..........this female.......this filly........the only girl.....out ran........out performed.......out classed....every horse in the field.
In the past........I have been quite critical of Women's sports........particularly basketball....I am not a fan of female announcers........nor do I like women who want to play Men's sports.
That said..........these ........are horses....
They all have 4 legs.......they all look basically the same......."Rachel Alexandra"........just happened to be born........a female.
From the Baltimore Sun: Female fans cheer for Rachel Alexandra
I love it..........the new face of feminist........everywhere........
A horse!
What's happened..........to these "Dawgs"?

It seemed like only yesterday........we were bragging on the University of Georgia's men's baseball team.......affectionately known as the "Diamond Dawgs".....A month ago, Georgia was ranked number one in the nation..........and in first place in the SEC.
Now........after getting swept.......in South Carolina this week-end, (3 losses to the Gamecocks), these Dawgs have now lost 13 of their last 14 conference games.
After getting off to a stellar start........these guys........can't hit......field.....or pitch.
Baseball is a funny game. I played it........as did my brothers.......It is the only sport in which you can fail........7 out of 10 times at the plate.....and still have an above average......batting average of .300...
You can hit the ball.......square on the button.....and hit a line drive ...out.......right at someone.....or.....you can just get a piece of it.....and slice it in no man's land.....for a double.
This is what UGA is going through........time to regroup.....throw away all those headlines......get ready for the post-season....and play some ball.
Monday.......short shorts.....
Happy trails.....Tony Kornheiser....

Gruden to replace Kornheiser on MNF
Kornheiser has quit his gig as a commentator on ESPN's Monday Night Football....Our take? Good riddance....It's about the
game.....not talking heads..
Major League Baseball.......finally gets it...
Earlier start times for postseason baseball on Fox
It's about time.......Fox Sports and MLB have figured out....we folks that live on the east coast..would like to be able to watch a World Series game.....So they have moved up the starts.......45 minutes.......it's a start.
It is May.......isn't it?
In this southern college town.......last night.....the temperature was 47 degrees..........hardly welcomed.....in the deep south. I even turned on the heat....in my car? Global warming?
When?
Have a great Monday........

The Plaxico Burris fiasco........
Only in New York. Seems Plaxico's self treatment of a pulled hamstring in his right thigh calls for a bullet to that said thigh.
Yes, Mr. Burris , shot himself in the right thigh..........in an accidental shooting at a night club in the City. Here is where things get absolutely silly.
Mr. Burris then went to a hospital..........called on one of those "friends of the family doctors" for treatment.....failed to report it to police........and used an alias name (Harris Smith) and said he had been shot at an Applebees ..........
Teammate, Antonio Pierce was also at the club and is believed to have hidden the gun.....
The Giants have placed Plaxico on the reserve non-football injury list.......meaning he won't get paid....and suspended him for the last four games. The NYPD has charged him with possessing an illegal firearm.
By the way..........Mr. Burris is married to a lawyer..........go figure. Below is ProFootballTalk.com's take on this.
Before trying out his Christmas gift, Plaxico ponders this warning: “You’ll shoot your thigh out.”
#1..........and a 10 point dog........
Leave it to college football. The number 1 ranked team in the nation, Alabama (12-0) faces Florida (11-1) in Saturday's SEC Championship game and the Tide is a 10 point underdog.
What is going on here? In the name of Bear Bryant, what is Vegas thinking? Bama is undefeated........untied...........#1 in the BCS.......the game is in a neutral site........
That said........take Florida.....and lay the points.
LeBron James and Charles Barkley in a war of words....
Charles is not too thrilled about all of talk surrounding James supposedly heading to the N Y Knicks in 2010.......

Be Afraid.......Be Very Afraid.........

Note to the "Bulldog Nation"..........
Be afraid........be very afraid.........In one week, the Georgia Bulldogs will play a football game in Athens against their archest of arch rivals, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
Yes, the Dawgs have won 7 straight against the "Ramblin' Wreck.......
Yes, it is a home game for the Dogs.......
Yes, on paper, Georgia is the more talented team....
But............Last night.....on a nationally televised game on ESPN, Jonathan Dwyer (pictured) and Tech destroyed a good Miami Hurricane team, 41-23. And it was not even close.
A closer look at the numbers reveal Tech gained 472 yards rushing the football behind new head coach Paul Johnson's triple option offense.
472 yards!
On 56 attempts..........and only 1 fumble lost. Tech only threw the ball 7 times (completing 4)........but why throw......when you can gain 8 1/2 yards every time you run the ball.
Yes, Georgia is 9-2.........ranked 11th in the latest BCS poll...........
But........ have you watched this Bulldog defense lately?
So .......Bulldog Nation........a week from tomorrow...........be afraid..........be very afraid....
Hump Day News & Views

As in 4 straight losses for the Atlanta Hawks. The team that took the NBA by storm early on by winning their first 6 games, has done a complete turn-about , in losing the last 4.
Suddenly, these Hawks can't shoot, pass, or play defense. And now, two starters ( Josh Smith and Al Horford) are out of the lineup due to injuries.
Planning ahead....way ahead....

The University of Texas has announced their new head football coach, Will Muschamp......well, sort of.
Thing is though , Texas already has a coach..... 57 year old Mack Brown.....In naming Muschamp (37) "head-coach-in-waiting"..... the University doubled the defensive coordinator's salary, from $425,000 to $900,000.
Makes you wonder, "What if?" What if Brown wants to coach for another 10 to 20 years? Just wondering........
BCS on ESPN.....
Don't look for division 1 college football play-offs anytime soon.....or at least until 2014. ESPN has just paid $125 million for the rights to broadcast the BCS bowls and championship games starting in 2011. Fox Sports has the rights through 2010. For everything good ESPN has done for college football..........it's greed has once again set back a play-off system.
Miami and Georgia Tech......a Thursday night affair...
These two teams have played more games on Thursday....on ESPN......than any other teams in the nation, and will meet again tomorrow night in Atlanta. Miami (7-3) is 13-1 on the ESPN showcase while Tech (7-3) is 9-11. By the way, there are over 8,000 seats still available ........
Diversity in MLB?

Congrats to the Seattle Mariners..........The Mariners have hired Don Wakamatsu as manager and in doing so make Wakamatsu the first ever Asian-American to manage in Major League Baseball. What a year for change...........and that's a good thing.
Another Michael Vick Update....
Yet another story about our favorite black quarterback........
From the Associated Press and ESPN..........
Vick's lawyers say their client expects to play in NFL again
NORFOLK, Va. -- Michael Vick's bankruptcy attorneys say the imprisoned NFL quarterback expects to return to football.

Vick
Vick still has a contract with the Atlanta Falcons. But NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell would have final say on his return.
The attorneys also lay out a plan for Vick to pay his creditors based on his expected NFL earnings and possible signing bonuses.

Don't blame the messenger....
This Ref.......Still has a Job?
In Saturday nights' LSU / South Carolina game, a referee makes a forearm shiver tackle on South Carolina's QB, Stephen Garcia.
He was clearly .....not .....trying to get out of the way........Instead, he initiates the contact.
This ref should be fired.....today......if not sooner.
But don't believe me........you can be your own judge........

This is getting interesting........from the Augusta Chronicle...
UGA Blackout = Funeral?
And then...........from ESPN....
Georgia's man in black fires back ... sort of
This Georgia "Blackout" thing is getting rather testy.
You remember........The Dawgs will don their black jerseys against Alabama on Saturday and will urge their fans to all wear black....in.......the "black out".
Well........an Alabama assistant coach was caught on video (and of course it made its way to YouTube) saying, "They (Georgia) will be wearing black........because they're going to a "motha fuckin" funeral"......Their own!
Ouch!
Ain't SEC football ..........fun?
And who's funeral ....will it be?

War of Words

Radio interviews can be quite entertaining........
Especially when the interviewee is pissed off at the interviewer.
Such was the case this week at a Washington DC sports radio station. It was the "John Thompson Show", where Clinton Portis (the interviewee) went off on Brian Mitchell (the interviewer). Old man John Thompson had to referee......
See this clip......courtesy of YouTube....
The Knowshon Hurdle

Every one is talking about the "play".......It happened last Saturday in the Georgia - Central Michigan game.
Knowshon Moreno had a run for the ages...........a play that will go down as one of the greatest to the "Bulldog Nation". A sure high-light ........A sure "Top 10" play on ESPN......
But a funny thing happened........You never got to see it on ESPN........They never showed that replay. After an outrage from Georgia fans, ESPN threw Fox Sports (the original broadcaster of the game) under the bus..........claiming Fox didn't include that particular play in the high-light feed.
Anyway........thanks to YouTube........we have for you here:
Hump Day News & Views

The Democratic National Convention is in full swing. Say what you want about Hillary Clinton, but she didn't miss a beat in her speech last night. I was a little taken aback with that orange pant suit........Looked a lot like Tennessee orange.
We are just days away from final cut down day in the NFL......As of September 1st.....all teams must get their rosters down to 53 players. How many big names are we going to see.......without a team?
College football kicks off tomorrow.....Hard to believe. Has it been a year?
Rain drops actually fell on this southern college town. About 5 inches of this liquid ....sorely missed over the last 6 months. I could have sworn I heard the grass and trees utter in harmony, " Thank you , Jesus"!!
Why........am I even watching the Democratic National Convention?
ESPN and the Southeast Conference (SEC).......have inked a 15 year multi-billion dollar deal. This means........almost every single SEC football game will be aired somewhere on the ESPN family of networks. They are going to name it, " The SEC on ESPN"..........The rich....just keep on getting.......richer.
Finally..........This weekend is Labor Day weekend....noting the end of summer. It's been the normal southern summer. Hazy, hot, humid, and dry. It can't end soon enough for me.
Have a great Hump Day........
